Thank you for the game! It’s a pity that it’s so short. I wanted more of it. :)

I do feel the Undertale inspiration. It’s not only about the combat system, it’s also about the movement outside of the combat, the style and humor as well.

I recorded a video of my playthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qjj6YBp6NY8 It could be useful for you if you want to see how a new player might play that game on their own.

A few random thoughts about the game:

  • The font is sometimes hard to read. I feel the aesthetic, but it hurts the readability a little bit.

  • Consider testing this game in the windowed mode. Sometimes it opens in a zoomed mode, sometimes it’s a tiny 300x300 (?) window which is really hard to see. :D It’s great that I was playing on a normal display, it would be a disaster on a High-DPI display.

  • I had to use a windowed mode to capture the game. Perhaps it’s an OBS configuration issue, or maybe it’s something that can be fixed in the game. I wonder if it is a common problem with Game Maker games.

  • I was running a game on Linux via Wine. It installed properly. I had no issues running the game afterwards. I executed the game from the terminal to have a chance of getting any debug/error messages, but I got nothing peculiar in there by the end. So good job. :D

  • Sometimes it’s annoying to skip through a text I already seen. Maybe add a button to skip the dialogue/cutscene completely.

  • As a continuation of the previous point, I would appreciate an indicator like “you have more interaction options with this object”. I’m interested to read more and consume & appreciate more content, but the game should be convenient to do so. :)

  • The “guard” (defend?) action looks not very useful right now. I found no uses for it. Could you tell me if I’m missing something?

  • I would add the info about who is going to be attacked on the phase when you can choose your own action. If we add an attack name to this, the player could “guard” against the attack they’re bad at dodging to keep their party members alive to do a double attack during an easier to dodge enemy move. I think it would make the battles more interesting. It would also give you an option to make some move REALLY hard to avoid (the player is expected to guard against it, unless they’re amazing at dodging).

  • The “check” action should probably keep the turn. Unless it gives you some vital information. Right now it’s mostly about the flavor text.

  • I found no way to redo the battle with the TV ghost. I wish I could do it… It looks like pressing the retry button doesn’t actually give you a retry option. The game progresses differently. That wasn’t too obvious to me. :)

  • The sound levels config would be useful. Especially for the folks that are trying to record the game playthrough. :)

  • I really like the red attacks reflection mechanic. I wasn’t good at utilizing it, but it’s a good addition to the combat system.

  • The attack circle is also a good one. I got it figured out (I think) near the end. :D I believe it increases your chance to score 3 damage if you’re doing it right. If you’re waiting for just a tad too long, it’s 1 damage.

  • A special thanks for posting the list of tools being used. Tiled is a good one, I use it too. I used Game Maker before it became a Game Maker Studio. :D Oh, the nostalgia. I’ll check out the other tools tool.
